Barrel & Vessel: The Art of Aging Wine

Date: 2019-06-22

Barrel & Vessel: The Art of Aging Wine Crossroads is thrilled to partner with Oregon Folklife Network, Travel Baker County, Go Wild Adventures and Copper Belt Winery to bring an exciting and fun educational opportunity. On June 22nd, 2019 we welcome Rick DeFerrari, Master Cooper, and Culture Keeper from the Oregon Folklife Network and Andrew Beckham, an Amphora Maker.  A cooper, is a traditional barrel maker, a centuries-old craft necessary to aging wine. Rick was first schooled in the renowned Burgundy region of France, DeFerrari has spent decades attaining a deep knowledge of barrel toasting. The results of his craft are the oak flavors wines acquire while aged in his vessels, and a product that keeps his services in demand.  An Amphora is a type of container of a characteristic shape and size, descending from at least as early as the Neolithic Period. Amphorae were used in vast numbers for the transport and storage of various products, both liquid and dry, but mostly for wine. They are most often ceramic, and Andrew is self taught making Amphorae to age his Beckham Estate Wines. He is also a high school pottery instructor.  Rick will be giving a free demonstration and will be toasting a barrel at Crossroads from 10 am to Noon.  Andrew will be giving a free demonstration at Crossroads from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM about the history of amphora making, how they are made, types of clay, firing techniques and share how wine is aged in amphorae. The public is invited to come, ask questions, and learn more about this remarkable folk tradition. In the evening, Crossroads is partnering with GoWild Adventures and Copper Belt Winery for a ticketed dinner adventure out to the Copper Belt Winery in the heart of the Keating Valley. Tickets include: guided transportation from Baker City to the winery, gourmet smoke-fired pizza, music, demonstration and discussion with Rick and Andrew, plus wine tasting of wines made in Rick’s oak casks, Andrew’s Amphora, Copper Belt wine…plus so much more.
