In From the Deep - Featuring Michael Schlicting

The impressive and notorious nature of the annual salmon run has had a lifelong impression for artist Michael Schlicting. Growing up on the Oregon coast, the creek running through the farm and childhood home to Schlicting would showcase the life cycle of these unique creatures. Schlicting captures the tremulous moment of life and death; the exhausting journey of intuition in a single frame. The moment of these animals are as definitive as night and day. With a unique style and twist that brings to mind if Pablo Picasso and George Braque grew up in Oregon.

"A modest little creek ran through the farm where I grew up on the Oregon coast. There was a nice fall run of salmon, pink and red as they made their way up the riffles and deep pools of the creek to spawn. Afterwards, their decaying carcasses were found tangled in the creek side brush and beached on every gravel bar.
These images have stayed with me over the years and have been the inspiration for this series of paintings. The shapes, color and movement of the fish are the departure point for these intuitive compositional explorations." -Michael Schlicting
